Overview
Within Acceptable Limits places the player in an isolated nuclear facility as its lone remaining technician. From the control room, alarms and unstable machinery demand constant attention. Keeping the plant operational means navigating industrial spaces, deciding which breakdowns to address and balancing maintenance with basic survival.
Challenge
The main challenge was producing tension through interdependent systems rather than combat or scripted scares. Every repair takes time; responding to one failure may allow another to escalate. The sprawling facility must also be readable and navigable under pressure.
Development
Developed with a modular 3D environment encompassing control room, reactor chamber, turbine hall, decontamination, cafeteria and staff areas. The design combines monitoring, fault diagnosis, maintenance, exploration and survival pressures including fatigue, hunger, thirst and contamination.
Outcome
The game-jam work established the setting, industrial environment and foundations of a maintenance-driven survival loop. Further development can deepen system interactions and the consequences of competing priorities.
